Terrylynn Fisher’s SRES® message about guiding older adults through selling a longtime family home.

Why Working With an SRES® Can Make a Difference When You’re Ready for Your Next Chapter

Terrylynn Fisher’s SRES® message about guiding older adults through selling a longtime family home.

Selling a home you’ve lived in for decades is different than selling a house you’ve owned for a few years.

There’s usually a story behind every room. The kitchen where your family gathered. The backyard where children played. The hallway that holds years of family photographs and memories.

So when the time comes to sell, you’re not simply preparing a property for the market. You’re saying goodbye to a place that has been an important part of your life.

That’s one of the reasons I became a Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®).

The SRES® designation is awarded by the Center for REALTOR® Development, an official credential of the National Association of REALTORS®. SRES® professionals receive specialized training focused on the unique needs of buyers and sellers aged 50 and over.

But to me, being an SRES® is about more than a designation. It’s about understanding that a later-life move often requires a different kind of guidance.

It’s About More Than the Real Estate Transaction

When you’re moving after many years in one home, there can be a lot to consider.

Maybe you’re thinking about downsizing. Maybe you’re retiring and want a home that requires less maintenance. Perhaps a significant life event has prompted you to consider a change.

Whatever the reason, the decision may involve financial, practical and emotional considerations that go well beyond buying or selling a house.

That’s why I believe the process should move at a pace that feels right for you.

Sometimes the first step isn't putting your home on the market. It may simply be having a conversation about your options and what a move could look like.

You may need time to think.

You may need help creating a downsizing plan.

Or you may need trusted professionals to help with some of the decisions that come along with a transition.

My job is to be your resource and your guide—not to rush you into a decision.

A Network of Trusted Professionals

One of the benefits of working with an SRES® is having access to a network of professionals who are accustomed to working with older adults.

Depending on your circumstances, you may need the expertise of an estate planning attorney, tax professional, financial advisor, estate planner, downsizing specialist or moving company.

Having trusted resources to turn to can make an already complicated transition feel much more manageable.

I can't be the expert in every area—and I don't believe your REALTOR® should pretend to be. What I can do is help connect you with professionals who can provide the specialized guidance you need.

Patience Matters

There is also an emotional side to these moves that shouldn't be overlooked.

Selling a longtime family home can bring up memories, difficult decisions and sometimes uncertainty about what comes next. The SRES® training recognizes those emotional aspects and the sensitive issues that can accompany selling a family home or purchasing a new one later in life.

That’s why patience matters.

You may need to take your time sorting through belongings. You may want to involve family members in the decision-making process. You may simply need someone who will listen while you work through what comes next.

There is no one-size-fits-all timeline for making a move.

Understanding Your Housing Options

Another important part of the process is understanding where you might go next.

Downsizing doesn't necessarily mean the same thing to everyone. For one person, it may mean a smaller home. For another, it could mean an active adult community or a different type of housing that better fits their lifestyle.

An SRES® can help you explore the housing options available in your area and consider what may best fit your lifestyle, preferences and future plans.

That conversation can be valuable even if you're not ready to make a move today.

Start With a Conversation

If you've lived in your home for 20, 30, 40 or more years, the idea of moving can feel overwhelming.

You don't have to have all the answers before you begin.

You don't have to know exactly where you're going.

And you certainly don't have to make every decision at once.

Sometimes the best place to start is simply a conversation.

As an SRES®, my goal is to help you understand your options, make a plan that works for you and connect you with the resources you need along the way.

Because this isn't just about selling a house.

It's about helping you navigate an important transition with confidence, compassion and a plan for what comes next.

And whenever you're ready, I'm here to help.

REALTOR® and RESOURCE are synonymous. It’s your real estate journey… I am the guide.

Your REALTOR® for life,

Terrylynn Fisher
