What Makes a Place Great For Seniors

Hello, this month’s topic is Aging in Place (see pg 2). The point of this newsletter is to think about these things BEFORE you need it.

Maybe start with things like removing trip hazards and/or rugs. Rugs should be easy to navigate and secured to the floors so that there isn’t a risk of slip or falling. Installing a raised toilet seat, or putting light switch covers that are easier to turn on and off, can be done for a modest investment with a handy service. That way if you have a 2 story home for example, and you need knee surgery or can no longer navigate stairs, having researched stair lifts or elevators, can make this decision a lot easier. If those are not things you are considering then perhaps it helps you decide to move to a one story home. It’s always easier to make these decisions when you are not under duress.

What Makes a Place Great for Seniors?

Did you know being closer to family and friends is the #1 reason people move? But, not all cities are created equal when it comes to senior living! AARP’s Livability Index ranks towns and cities based on seven key factors that help older adults thrive:
  • Affordable, accessible housing
  • Walkable neighborhoods
  • Reliable public transit
  • Clean, healthy environments
  • Nearby health care
  • Social activities
  • Opportunities for growth
(actually this list looks a lot like the list for many clients looking for a change and a new home.)

Thinking about your next move? Whether you’re looking for walkable streets, easy access to health care, or vibrant social activities, I can help you explore communities that truly fit your lifestyle and needs.
