Top Tripping Hazards In Your Home

Top Tripping Hazards In Your Home April 2026

How Can I Make My Home Safer to Prevent Falls as I Age?

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury for adults over 65, and many of these incidents occur in the home. The challenge is that many potential hazards are not immediately obvious—they are often everyday features that homeowners have simply grown accustomed to over time.

Common areas to evaluate include loose rugs, extension cords, and cluttered pathways. Even small details, such as slightly raised thresholds or uneven flooring, can create tripping hazards. Poor lighting in hallways, staircases, and entryways can also increase risk, particularly during early morning or evening hours.

Bathrooms are another important area to consider. Slippery surfaces, high tub walls, and the absence of support features such as grab bars can make this space more challenging.

Outdoor areas should not be overlooked. Uneven walkways, cracked surfaces, and inadequate lighting can present additional concerns.

As homeowners age, changes in balance, vision, and reaction time can make these everyday features more impactful. Small adjustments—such as improving lighting, removing rugs, or adding support features—can significantly improve safety.

It is also worth considering whether a home will continue to support long-term needs. Some homeowners choose to make modifications, while others explore homes that are designed with accessibility and ease of living in mind.
